The volume loss about the eyes can be noticed when the lower eyelid becomes lax and as a result, normal fat beneath the eyelid protrudes or pushes out on the eyelid and creates eye bags or puffy eyes. This protruding lower eyelid tissue creates a shadow in the normal depression below the eyelid and creates dark circles under the eye, a hallmark of eyelid aging, giving the face a tired and aged look. Though the bagginess under the eye cannot be removed without surgery, filling the tear trough with safe effective fillers can dramatically reduce the dark circles and hollows and improve the cosmetic appearance of the bagginess creating a more refreshed and younger look around the eye area. 
Hyaluronan Facial Fillers (Restylane, Juvederm) are ideal for eyelid rejuvenation. It is soft, malleable immediately correctible and ideal to mould without leaving lumps. There may also be other causes for dark circles under the eyes. Hyperpigmentation is common with darker skin types as they inherit a genetic tendency for dark pigmentation around the eyes. This can respond to pigment suppressing agents such as Radiance as well as laser treatments. In patients with paler skin, dark circles can be due to excess pigment or vascularity (small blood vessels). Prominent vessels will give the appearance of a bluish-purplish tinge to the lower eyelid and can respond well to IPL Photofacial. The earliest eyelid aging changes are eye wrinkles called crow’s feet which we see on the corner of our eyelids on the cheek when we smile. In the next step of aging, we lose volume in certain parts of our face while we gain volume in other parts. Generally speaking, the region around our eyes and cheeks begins to lose fat, while the jowl and neck begin to gain fat. As we age and lose this facial fat it will elongate the lower eyelid, and lower the position of the lid to the cheek junction and expose the herniated fat pad of the lower lid. This results in three grooves in the mid face: the nasal folds, the lower eyelid folds and the mid cheek groove.
